A robot developed by the Industrial Systems Unit of Fatronik-Tecnalia for Airbus, the aerospace company, was selected from over 100 companies worldwide as finalist at the Strategic Manufacturing Awards 2008 in the category, Innovation.
San Sebastian-based Fatronik-Teknalia explained that these awards form part of the fourth European Manufacturing Strategies Summit, which will be held from October 6 to 9, when the selection panel will announce its decision.
The Tecnalia robot, known as Roptalmu, is said to be “lightweight and portable" and meant to "drill large holes in aeronautical components”, like wing spars on airplanes, during assembly. This machine will compete in the Microsoft sponsored Innovation category, against companies like SAP, Bombardier, HP, Rockwell and Procter & Gamble.
